Cambridge takes to the stage at the 76th Frankfurt Book Fair
Cambridge returns to Frankfurt in 2024 with a message about the role of academic publishing in an age of environmental crisis and misinformation
Following a year of continued debate about AI and authorship, publishing and sustainability, and the role of academic experts in public life, Cambridge University Press & Assessment is joining fellow industry leaders at the 76th Frankfurt Book Fair.
Being the world's largest trade fair for books, Frankfurt is the place to be for publishers looking to help shape the industry and better understand the forces and opportunities influencing publishing today and tomorrow.
At the Book Fair, Cambridge will learn more about what authors, agents and readers are seeking from us and other publishers; as well as how we might influence our industry to move in a more equitable and sustainable direction. As as non profit academic publisher, we want to add our voice and perspective to conversations and debates.
Driven by data
On Thursday, 17 October at 4.30pm, we will be hosting a discussion on sustainability. As part of this event, we will explore how publishers can adopt more environmentally supportive practices in their work. For example at Cambridge we are working to:
- make 95 percent of our new titles print-on-demand by 2025
- move 70 percent of our print journals to online only by 2030.
Misinformation
At Frankfurt, we're bringing a message that the value of academic publishing in an age of misinformation has never been greater:
"Evidence-based argument and reliable information from experts have never been more important and relevant at a time when misinformation is everywhere; for example, on how hurricanes can be engineered, on Covid and vaccines, or on the recent riots in the UK."
In 2024, more than ever, the Cambridge approach to publishing matters. With the Press's fierce commitment to editorial independence and the high-quality books we publish - over 1200 this year alone - that bring scholarship to a wide audience around the world, university presses such as Cambridge have a unique and important role to play in the media and publishing landscape.
Mandy Hill, Managing Director, Academic, identified a number of Cambridge books that speak directly to the topic of misinformation including;
- A Climate of Truth, by Mike Berners-Lee, which is coming out in early 2025
- the recently published Adultish by Dr Charlotte Markey, which provides evidence-based information about health and body image
- The Conservative Effect, 2010-2024; 14 Wasted Years?, which analyses the impact of a wide range of policies from austerity to the response to Covid.
"We remain one of the most rigorous types of publishing houses in terms of fact checking and seeking to eliminate bias. It's a vital counterbalance to the 24-hour news cycle."
